Gellért Hill (Gellért hegy) Budapest
Gellért Hill stands over 230m above sea level and, topped by the Liberation Monument and the Citadel, is one of the dominating elements of the Danube panorama.
The fortress known as the Citadel stands behind the Liberation Monument. It was built by the Austrians in 1851 as a symbol of their power following the defeat of the Hungarians in the War of Independence. In 1897 the thick walls were breached in a few places, signifying that the fortress no longer served military purposes. Today it is a tourist attraction, offering a marvellous view of the city.
On the eastern side of Gellért Hill stands the Gellért Monument.
